San Juan Wilderness - Location
San Juan Wilderness is located in the beautiful San Luis Valley of Southern
Colorado. Our headquarters in Monte Vista, (elevation 7763 ft.) sits at
the foot of the San Juan Mountain Range. Our base-camp (elevation 9400
ft.) is located on 40 acres completely surrounded by the pristine Rio
Grande National Forest.
Our permits and trail projects allow us to explore over 1500 miles of
trails, peaks and valleys within the 1.86 million acre Rio Grande National
Forest. This includes 236 miles of the Continental Divide Trail, the San
Juan Wilderness (a 280,000 acre road-less area) and the majestic Sangre
de Cristo Mountains, including numerous 14,000 foot peaks. Counselors
and Students will almost never hike the same trail twice in a season.
Our offices in Monte Vista, Colorado are three hours from Colorado Springs
and three hours from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Parents and students usually
fly into the Colorado Springs Airport or Alamosa Airport (20 minutes from
our offices).
The San Luis Valley is sparsely populated rural
area nestled between two massive mountain ranges. Our neighbors are predominately
farm and ranch families living in the countryside and the descendants
of Spanish colonials who migrated here from Santa Fe, New Mexico some
400 years ago.
